I hope everyone had a relaxing, food filled Memorial Day weekend! I know that I did. And now I can almost guarantee that I’m going to be so lost on what day it is for the rest of the week. Being a stay at home mom I have a hard time keeping track already but throw in a holiday at the beginning of the week where my kids and husband are home and now you just disrupt my whole natural process. I’m sure I can’t be the only one who can say this!
Memorial Day is one of those essential holidays where you almost have to grill. It’s the gateway to summer and busting out that grill just seems so significant to me and how we would always celebrate this day. Now don’t be fooled by the picture of this recipe! These are definitely a grilled item! They are just finished off in a beautiful vat filled with beer and onions! Need I say more?? Didn’t think so.
This recipe is so simple and I haven’t really had a brat recipe that I have ever fallen in love with like this one. I honestly didn’t even put any toppings on mine besides the sautéed onions! Yeah, now that says something. Usually I’m the girl who puts ketchup, mustard and relish on. Yup, not these. Although I do dip and top my brats with baked beans. I know, now you’re looking at me like “what is this girl thinking?” No seriously, its amazing. Next time you make beans with your brats give it a try!
You can use essentially any brats for this recipe, we used a mix of deli and a store-bought pack. Johnsonville pairs really well with the beer, but that is personal preference!
1 package of bratwurst
1 medium onion, sliced
2 Tbs butter
2 Tbs brown sugar
1 12 oz dark beer
Grill brats until they are done. Meanwhile in large pan saute onions in butter until they start to get tender. Add brown sugar and stir to coat. Add in brats and pour beer over. Cover and simmer for about 20 mins. Serve on buns topped with onions and your favorite condiments!
